The Challenge

Liquid I.V. wanted to enhance its ecomm experience — without a bloated tech stack

Liquid I.V.®, a fast-growing, omnichannel CPG brand, is defying conventional hydration with refreshing true-to-fruit flavor, science-backed drink mixes.

Like most growing brands, Liquid I.V.’s team found that a Shopify theme was exactly what they needed to kickstart their business.

As the brand scaled, the team used a constantly-evolving spider web of add-ons and third-party apps on their site—including trying out two CMSs—to bring their shopping experience to life.

With so many tools and approaches, it became increasingly difficult to:

  • Create and manage content without a developer

  • Keep web experiences fresh

  • Preserve site performance and stability

  • Keep costs for 3rd party apps and site maintenance in check

On top of this, the Liquid I.V. brand and their impact initiatives continued to evolve. Its efforts for social good—of increasing clean water access globally and domestically, as well as product donations to non-profit organizations who support those in need of daily hydration and at disaster zones—added another layer of complexity to their content management.

“While a Shopify theme was definitely the right place to start, it became increasingly clear that we were trying to fit a square peg in a round hole when it came to content management. Using 3rd party tools to inject content into a theme led to a lot of complications, and a traditional headless approach wasn’t the answer because it didn’t solve for ease of use. We needed a third option,” explains

The goal:

Liquid I.V. wanted a platform that would allow them to sell directly to consumers and support their charitable initiatives — without sacrificing on flexibility, cost, or performance. A low-maintenance, easy-to-use solution was a top priority, so that the team was free to move fast and launch new content without a developer.

The solution:

After careful planning and close collaboration, Liquid I.V. designed and launched a Pack + Hydrogen storefront that sets the team—and Liquid I.V.’s customers—up for success. Here’s what they love about it:

  • Site Performance: Liquid I.V.’s blazing-fast site and instant page loads keep customers engaged and conversion rates high.

  • Flexibility: With a framework that’s designed for flexibility and interactivity, the team can launch customer-driven experiences like a build-your-own-bundle page or shoppable blog content that would be difficult to achieve on a theme.

  • Developer productivity: Instead of building workarounds or fighting stability fires, development resources are focused on customer-facing, revenue-generating features. Plus, they’re launching new features faster than ever by pulling on open-source resources.

  • Lower maintenance costs: Shopify-backed hosting and site architecture keeps overhead costs low.

  • Fresh site content & faster time-to-market: Busting development bottlenecks with Pack’s visual content editor, the marketing team was freed up to launch rapid-fire campaigns and fresh content without adding to developers’ backlogs.

The best part: the transition to a Pack + Hydrogen storefront only took a few weeks since it was built on Packs Hydrogen theme, Blueprint. With Shopify Hydrogen’s new approach to site architecture and Pack’s visual content management experience, the team has the flexibility, agility and performance they need to scale.

“Instead of spending our time on workarounds, we focused on elevating the experience on our website; both for us and our customer. The usability has amplified our agility for execution when it comes to getting products, campaigns, and features out the door—resulting in an overall better experience for us and the customer.”
